Yes, you may be scratching your head while pondering the title of this missive. One of the things we try to do here at the Old School Patriot is to inspire critical thinking. The title comes from the sermon delivered yesterday at Watermark Community Church by Senior Pastor, Todd Wagner. It was part of his series called, “How We Built This” — a very interesting spin on the proclamation of one Barack Obama who once asserted that if you own a business, you didn’t build that.
What Pastor Wagner was bringing to the congregation’s attention is how have they been able to build such a successful, and powerful, ministry here in Dallas. His subject centered around the wise words of King Solomon captured in Psalms 127:3-5 (New International Version):
Pastor Wagner emphasized that the success of Watermark –how they build it — is focused on the training up of the children, and adults, setting the right and proper example for them to follow. As a matter of fact, it was King Solomon who later wrote in Proverbs 22:6 (New International Version), “Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it.”
We often hear politicians rant about “increasing investments in education,” what they mean is to waste more money on a system of indoctrination that was once an exceptional system of education. See, Pastor Wagner was addressing a different type of investment, one that does not require raising taxes, just one simple thing . . . adults, parents, be parents . . . be archers!
What was Pastor Todd talking about? To what was King Solomon alluding with his arrows and quivers reference? It’s simple folks.
Y’all know how much I enjoy going to the shooting range, and what is the purpose? That’s easy: to better train myself to take aim and hit the target. A firearm, a bullet, an arrow does no harm or good unless there is interaction with a person.
King Solomon wanted us to realize the true blessing, gift, and reward that children are. He wanted us to recognize how blessed we are to have our quiver full of these, well, arrows. But, think about it, what good is the arrow if the warrior, the archer, does not utilize them, take aim, and let them fly toward the target?
When you consider Solomon’s wise counsel in Proverbs 22:6 you realize that we must take those arrows, our children, out of the quivers, and take aim, train them onto the target and let loose. And, if we, the archers, as parents, have a true aim, they will strike the target. As well, if we are not attentive, someone may come along and take our arrows from our quiver, and fire them in a completely different direction, a different target, one that does not bode well.
Think about it, and what we see happening to our young people today. We have an epidemic of suicide, drug and alcohol abuse, illicit sexual activity, and gender confusion being promulgated and proliferated throughout the groups we call millennials and Generation X. These arrows are going astray and off target. When you assess what is happening with our young people, the blame falls to the archers. See, when your child comes to you and believes in principles, values, and ideas that are antithetical to what you stand for, someone took your arrow from your quiver and trained them upon a different target.Of course, some of us may remember the famous words of a person who said, 'It takes a village to raise a child.' The problem is that, often times, the village idiots are the ones in charge. Click To Tweet
How confusing it must be for children to have adults that do not believe children are a heritage from the Lord, a reward. Then our children look at the news and see elected leaders advocating for infanticide, and others cheering their delusion. How did we get to the point that adults came up with the silliness called the “participation trophy.” and now we have our children believing they are entitled to “free” things? Our children are failing to understand that liberty brings forth the equality of opportunity to pursue your happiness, your dreams. Placing hope in man, and their empty promises to guarantee happiness only results in equality of outcomes, economic enslavement, servitude.
We the archers must set the example, and that is really what Solomon, and Pastor Todd, were conveying as their message. At Watermark, they have a three-point program to train the archers:
- Parents are Primary
- Discipleship is a Team Sport (Community of Faith), and
- The Future is Now.
Of course, some of us may remember the famous words of a person who said, “It takes a village to raise a child.” The problem is that, often times, the village idiots are the ones in charge. And you do not want the village idiot shooting arrows! Therein lies the problem: we are abandoning our arrows, and they are being picked up by those who should not be trusted to handle them.Therein lies the problem: we are abandoning our arrows, and they are being picked up by those who should not be trusted to handle them Click To Tweet
None of us are perfect, but let us commit to doing one thing: trying to be a true example for our children and not letting anyone else take away that responsibility. We must be the archers, and I am calling for y’all to step up to the firing line with your quiver and start taking true aim.
Yes, the future is indeed now, and we need adults, parents, and archers to ensure we preserve these blessings of Liberty and Freedom. We must — today — commit to raising the next generation of strong Christian, Conservatives; the next generation of straight arrows; the next generation of Old School Patriots.
