I have stated this before, and it is worth repeating, facts to progressive socialists are like sunlight to vampires. In both cases, it causes an apoplectic meltdown. Now, if you have not been paying attention, the new House Democrat majority has clearly stated that one of their top priorities is gun control. As a matter of fact, we just had far-left California Congressman Eric Swalwell make an absurd assertion about gun confiscation. Remember, this Nation was started because those Massachusetts Patriots understood that being armed made them citizens, being rendered unarmed would make them subjects. How funny, the very State where the “shot fired heard ’round the world” was done, now has some of the most restrictive gun control laws in the Nation.
There was a recent report that once again affirms what those of us, law-abiding, legal gun owners have always known. As reported by Townhall:
“The Violence Prevention Research Program (VPRP) at UC Davis and the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health conducted a study about the impact California’s gun control laws have had on homicide and suicide rates over the last 10 years. And guess what? Researchers found that the Golden State’s gun control laws had absolutely no impact. And, even more surprising, the study’s lead researcher found that the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) is severely flawed.
“It compared observed annual firearm homicide and suicide rates in California over 10 years following enactment of comprehensive background check and misdemeanor violence prohibition policies in 1991 with expected rates based on data from 32 control states that did not have these policies and did not implement other major firearm policies during the same time,” researchers explained in a press release.
Specifically, researchers said they saw a 10.9 percent decrease in firearm suicide rates during the time period, but they saw a similar decrease in suicides across the board, including those without a firearm. This suggests something [other than] background checks and waiting periods played a role in the drop.
The one issue researchers have with California’s laws: the lack of reporting to NICS.
“Incomplete reporting of prohibiting data to background check systems in the 1990s, prior to implementation of the policies in California, is an important limiting factor,” Garen Wintemute, professor of emergency medicine and director of the Violence Prevention Research Program at UC Davis and senior author on the study, said in a statement. “In 1990, only 25 percent of criminal records were accessible in the primary federal database used for background checks, and centralized records of mental health prohibitions were almost nonexistent. As a result, a large number of people likely passed their background checks even in cases where, according to law, they should have been prohibited from purchasing a firearm. This remains a serious problem today; mass shootings have resulted from prohibited persons passing background checks and purchasing firearms.”
I think it is important to be reminded of the fact that the Sutherland Springs, Texas, church shooting had nothing to do with gun control. What it was all about was the fact that the US Air Force never entered the assailant into the criminal system. He had been convicted of a felony domestic violence/abuse charge and had a dishonorable discharge from the Air Force. These two issues are direct questions on BATF Form 4473, and would have prevented him from acquiring a firearm. The shooter in Aurora, Colorado had been undergoing psychiatric treatment, and his mental health issues were never disclosed. In the Sandy Hook shooting, the assailant had mental health issues, yet his mother had firearms in the home which he gained access to, killing her, and then proceeding to kill innocent little children. And in Parkland, Florida, at Marjory Stoneman Douglas high school, there were so many warning signs that went unheeded, it should be deemed criminal.
None of the aforementioned has anything to do with gun control, which only law-abiding citizens follow laws, criminals do not.
One of the major issues — and you can ascertain this by talking to any FFL, licensed firearms dealer — is the stovepiping of information or the lack of information sharing period. And trust me, these FFLs do not want to go to jail, it is a felony offense to sell firearms to a criminal. If anything, they will always err on the side of caution, and the law. Heck, as many times have I purchased firearms here in Texas from the same FFL, and never do they take a shortcut.
This is why when I hear the rhetoric from the progressive socialist left about loopholes and comprehensive background checks, the problem is with the background checks. The problem is that there are no clear-cut means to determine any issues of mental illness. The problem is not with law-abiding 18-year olds, which was nothing more than a political knee-jerk reaction.
The article continues:
“Gun rights advocates have long said there is an issue with NICS. If we, as gun owners, have to submit to a background check then the system needs to be whole. Having a system with a quarter of the convictions is useless. Why even have the background check system to begin with?
That’s why both the National Rifle Association (NRA) and the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) have long advocated for Fix NICS, which would require agencies to submit 100 percent of their convictions every six months.”
I am a sitting Board Member of the National Rifle Association and will speak here for myself as a gun owner. I have no issue with having to undergo a background check each time I purchase a firearm. As well, I have been gifted firearms, and guess what, the weapon is shipped to my FFL where I must undergo a background check. What I do want is a NICS program that is accurate and consistently updated. I do not want any leftist ideologue who is bent on collective subjugation as a means towards tyranny, denying me my Constitutional, Second Amendment right. The left does not want to solve the issue of these shootings, they just want control. And just like the Redcoats of the past, they realize that an armed citizenry is an obstacle to their ideological domination, where they can unleash their domestic terrorist gang, Antifa, anywhere.
As long as the left advocates for criminal illegal immigrants, sanctuary cities and states, open borders, abolishing ICE, and enables gangs to thrive, we must be able to protect and defend ourselves.
Our federal government needs to uphold and enforce the laws precluding criminals from acquiring firearms, as well as those mentally disturbed.
