With Whom Should the Kids at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School be Angry?

In Front Page, Second Amendment by Allen West

Greetings, folks, from our home in Plantation, Florida — yes, in Broward County, the most progressive socialist county in the Sunshine State. I am down here to visit with Angela and speak at the Boca Raton Republican Club. While here, I made my traditional trip to one of my favorite spots, Wings Plus Sample Road, in Coral Springs. Drop by and see Brian Walsh and the crew, and get some awesome chicken wings. Don’t worry, I ran four miles and had a bowl of cereal before chomping down ten crispy wings in honey mustard sauce!

This was the area that I was once honored to represent in Congress. And, as I sat there with Brian in Wings Plus, it was not lost on me that I was just ten minutes from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. I was talking with a friend who remembered that day as she was heading out from her house and encountered multiple local law enforcement vehicles heading towards Parkland, FL. As well, Wings Plus is a favored spot for Coral Springs Police Department officers, and so I received some good intelligence about that infamous Valentine’s Day, 2018.

And, as I write this missive, the title speaks for itself.

Why is it that David Hogg and the other young students of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School — who, by the way, are being used by the ideological anti-gun left — are so unfocused in their angst and anger? It was just this past weekend that conservative activist and pro-Second Amendment millennial, head of Turning Point USA, Charlie Kirk, was denied an opportunity to speak at Stoneman Douglas HS. Also, as I am a Life Member of the Nation’s oldest civil rights organization, the National Rifle Association (NRA) — as well as a sitting Board Member — the young chap, David Hogg, somehow believes that I have blood on my hands?

Why do we have these ill-conceived and dangerous assaults against the NRA? Everyday law-abiding Americans are the NRA! Why is it that these young people are being rehearsed, scripted, and issued talking points to assault an organization that supports a constitutional right, and not those who were directly responsible for the tragedy of February 14, 2018? Why aren’t the parents of these kids, for that is what they are, correcting their children and focusing them on solving the problem?

See, I expect to see little David Hogg in a few weeks in Dallas, TX, where I have my home, for the 147th NRA Annual Meeting and Convention. I think that I could actually save him a plane ride with my commentary here.

Mr. Hogg should remain in Broward County and ask the Superintendent of schools, Robert Runcie, why Nikolas Cruz was never entered into police records? Cruz had been expelled from Stoneman Douglas HS due to his violent actions and threatening behavior. One had to ask, what precluded this type of troubling behavior, which warranted an expulsion, not reported to the Broward County Sheriff’s office, as they have law enforcement jurisdiction over Parkland, FL? There was certainly enough probable cause to deem Cruz to be unsafe for that school community, to include restrictions upon his return. Mr. Hogg should ask about the Obama-era policy that basically encourages school districts to withhold reports of student misbehavior under the insidious reason of discrimination, as well as statistics of student violence, because it reflects negatively on acquiring federal education funding.

Mr. Hogg should stay in Broward County and ask the Broward Sheriff, Scott Israel, when he first knew that his Sheriff’s Deputy, Scot Peterson, had failed in his assigned duties by not confronting the assailant, Cruz. Mr. Hogg’s misguided angst should be aimed toward the one person who was charged to safeguard his school and friends. Why is it that Scot Peterson has not been charged with dereliction of duty or criminal negligence?

Mr. Hogg should ask Sheriff Israel, what exactly his criteria is for assignment of School Resource Officers (SROs)? I mean, who in their right mind would assign someone close to retirement to be the sole guardian of a school of 3000 students? And, while Mr. Hogg is at it, perhaps he should ask Sheriff Israel why it was that there were 45 visits to the home of Nikolas Cruz reference domestic disturbances, yet not a one was ever appropriately filed, on record, that would have prevented Nikolas Cruz from ever purchasing any firearm? Oh, Davey boy, the NRA has no issue with that, just like it was the Air Force and the Federal government that dropped the ball with the assailant in the Sutherland Springs shooting. Oh yeah, Davey, the person who ended the rampage there was an NRA member — an NRA trained firearms instructor — and he used an AR-15, yep, a semi-automatic rifle to take down the shooter. You have a problem with that, Mr. Hogg?

See, little Davey and the kids from Stoneman Douglas should stay right here in Broward County, FL, no more to be exploited by the liberal progressive left with media productions in Washington, DC. They should be asking the local Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) office why they did not take action on two credible tips on Nikolas Cruz and his intentions.

Do I think any of this will happen? Nope, David Hogg and his compatriots are being led by a partisan, ideological, agenda-driven movement that does not care about truth or facts. Sadly, Mr. Hogg and these young people of Stoneman Douglas HS are being emotionally co-opted for a specific purpose — “never let a good crisis go to waste.” And that means redirect anger towards an organization, Americans, who had nothing to do with the tragedy. It means that there are parents who refuse to do as Crosby, Stills, and Nash once sang, “teach the children well.” David Hogg and his crew should focus their anger on those directly responsible: Robert Runcie, Broward Sheriff Scott Israel, Sheriff Deputy Scot Peterson, and the FBI. Needless to say, we know that in the most liberal progressive county in Florida, that ain’t gonna happen.

But, I will offer this, if young David Hogg, or any of his compatriots, do indeed come to Dallas for the NRA convention, I would happily debate him before our membership. There has to be an adult that will not acquiesce to the rantings of these kids who have been trained and coached to misplace their anger.
